CALEDONIA, Mich. - On a rainy day in West Michigan, the Davenport men's soccer team improved to 3-0 in the GLIAC with their third straight shutout. The Panthers beat Northern Michigan (3-5, 2-2) 1-0 in a tightly-contested matchup.
COACHES CORNER - CHRIS HUGHES
"It was an important three points today for the boys. We faced a tough Northern Michigan team and kept a clean sheet. Each of these GLIAC games will be a boxing match. None will be easy but today we will take the win and prep for next weekend."
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The game's most important sequence happened in the second half. Northern Michigan played a long ball into the box and leading scorer Luca Lippert was just high with a shot.
Joshua Doupe delivered a strong goal kick and
Matt Whelan forwarded the ball downfield towards
Justice Sikkema. The freshman made a nice move to get around a defender to the right on the left wing and shot low to beat the keeper at the far post. Sikkema scored his third goal of the season on his only shot on goal for the game.
- Davenport and Northern Michigan each finished with 12 total shots. The Wildcats fired six shots on goal compared to four by the Panthers. Doupe earned his third straight clean sheet and stopped all six shots his way.
- Whelan led the team with five shots and two on goal.
- Davenport had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
- DU is now 3-1-1 in the all-time series.
