Warriors take opening game of series 26-3

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Wayne State Warriors showed why they are the top team in the Midwest Region rankings this week as they picked up their 30th win of the season with a 26-3 win over Davenport on Friday afternoon. The series opener was over almost as quickly as it began as Wayne State scored six runs in the first and five more in the second to take an 11-0 lead.

Max Swan had a rough night for the Panthers getting the start. He lasted four innings and gave up 12 hits and 14 runs (10 earned) with two walks and two strikeouts. He is now 1-2 this season after the loss. Hunter Brown one of the leading candidates for GLIAC Pitcher of the Year touched 96 mph on his fastball early in the contest for the Warriors. He went five innings to get the win and improved to 8-0. He allowed six hits and three earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

Dustin Renfroe finished the game in relief and did not allow a hit in four innings with a walk and five strikeouts. Davenport managed six hits and were hurt by four errors. Wayne State scored their 26 runs on 21 hits against five Davenport hurlers.

Brent Showers got the chance to pitch for the first time and tossed two innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out one. The Warriors scored three runs in the fourth to lead 14-0. Davenport scored their three runs in the fifth. Noah Marcoux had a sacrifice fly which scored Dylan Watson after he doubled to lead off the inning. Travis Harvey had an infield single for a RBI and Gaetano Vallone also had a RBI single to right field with two outs.

Kamrin Markwardt went 2-for-2 for the Panthers. He was the only Panther with multiple hits in the game. The top three of the order for Wayne State combined to go 9-for-16 at the plate with nine runs scored and 10 RBI. Jacob Finkbeiner went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI. Hunter DeLanoy also drove in three runs. 

The two teams will continue their weekend series on Saturday at noon. The doubleheader moved up one hour from its original start time. It will be Senior Day for Davenport as 10 players will be honored between games at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
