CALEDONIA, Mich. - It was a rough day at the plate on Friday afternoon for the Davenport baseball team as they were swept in a doubleheader against Northwood. The Panthers fell 3-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two. Davenport managed seven hits in the doubleheader as Max Bain and Zach Kregel both had complete game shutouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first game started off with the Timberwolves scoring a run in the top of the first. David Vinsky and Colin McClelland singled but remained at first and second with two outs. Both runners stole and a throwing error to third allowed Vinsky to scamper home with the first run.
James Rogers did a good job dancing around trouble for most of the game on the mound for the Panthers. He had traffic on the basepaths every inning as Northwood had a base hit to start each of the first six innings. The stress on Rogers from the stretch yielded 12 hits in 5.1 innings. The Timberwolves added a run in the top of the fourth and added another in the top of the sixth. Travis Janes and Michael Karam each had a RBI. The Timberwolves stole six bases in game one to keep the Panther defense on their heels.
Bain scattered five hits over seven innings as the Panthers left six on base. He finished with two walks and six strikeouts throwing 102 pitches (68 strikes). Rogers took the loss allowing two earned runs with a walk and three strikeouts.
Michael Lincoln tossed 1.2 hitless innings in relief for Davenport.
Davenport managed two hits in the nightcap against Kregel. The freshman had the outing of his brief career with three walks and four strikeouts.
Jacob Buchberger collected one of those hits and started the series by reaching base 10 straight times before a groundout in his last at-bat of game two.
Hunter Ruhstorfer collected the other hit for the Panthers in two at-bats.
Max Swan pitched the best start of his season going five innings. He walked two and struck out three. Northwood scored once in the fourth and sixth. Nick Palmer and Janes each had a sacrifice fly.
Travis Harvey made two great throws for Davenport as he cut down two potential runners at the plate from left field to end the inning with a double play. Buchberger threw two relief innings after Swan exited and walked three but allowed no hits and runs.
GAME NOTES
Davenport was shut out for the first time all season in game one and unfortunately repeated it in game two. Buchberger has extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his reached base streak to 13 games.
Noah Marcoux has also reached base in 13 straight games.
