WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The offense showed up big time on Sunday in the first two games of the spring trip for the Davenport baseball team. The Panthers swept Merrimack by scores of 18-2 and 11-7 to improve to 5-0 this season.
GAME 1
It was all DU in an 18-2 win over Merrimack who slipped to 0-2 this season. Both teams scored twice in the first inning but then the Panthers scored the last 16 runs to run away with the victory. After two runs allowed in the first, starter
Evan Marquardt shut down the Warriors for five innings. Marquardt went six innings and improved to 2-0 on the mound. He allowed five hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Michael Lincoln cleaned up in the bottom of the seventh retiring the Warriors in order with a strikeout.
The offense came from a few different sources.
Alex Huard in the leadoff spot went 1-for-3 with three runs and four RBI. He did his damage in the third inning with a three-run homer.
Nolan Bryant is the two-spot went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Travis Harvey hit his second triple of the season and drove in a run.
Noah Marcoux hit a monster solo home run to center in the fourth inning and scored three runs.
Cobe Huizenga and
Gaetano Vallone each had a pair of hits off the bench and combined to score five runs.
Jacob Buchberger collected two hits in five at-bats and scored two runs with a stolen base.
GAME 2
The Panthers completed the sweep with an 11-7 win in the nightcap. DU built an 11-3 lead and Merrimack made things interesting with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Taylor Turner improved to 2-0 on the mound going six innings. He allowed just four hits and three runs while walking one and striking out seven.
Sean Thompson for Merrimack lasted just three innings and allowed three runs. He walked five and struck out four. Davenport did their damage in the fourth and fifth innings with seven runs. Michael Jamele had three doubles for the Warriors and scored twice with two RBI.
Huard went 2-for-4 with three runs, a walk and RBI. Buchberger drove in four runs for the Panthers and stole two bases. DU stole seven bases in total during the contest.
Dylan Watson went 2-for-4 at the plate. Marcoux drove in two runs and walked twice.
Hunter Ruhstorfer collected two hits in three at-bats and scored twice.
