Panthers earn first win in overtime over Missouri S&T

Matt Whelan scored twice in the first half and Brogan Shrimpton netted the winner in the 99th minute

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The first home men's soccer match of the season was filled the drama as the Panthers won 3-2 in overtime against Missouri S&T on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers came out firing against the Miners and Brayden Texer nearly opened the scoring in the first 1:43 as he had a shot blocked and it just went wide right of the goal. Texer a few minutes later drilled a shot off the right post and Matt Whelan was there to clean up the rebound for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead at 6:01.

Whelan added his second goal at 9:09 as Texer squeezed a pass through defenders and Whelan ran past the Miner defense and had a wide open shot into the net from about 10 yards for a 2-0 advantage. Missouri S&T weathered the storm over the next several minutes and cut into the lead at 22:09. Austin Parks finished off a 4-on-3 rush by the Miners as Joe Mueller assisted on the goal with a diagonal pass to the left post. The Panthers finished the half with three more shots on goal and led 2-1 at the break.

The Miners continued to play well in the second half and DU didn't record a shot on goal until the 56:48 mark. Trey Haman had a good chance to tie the game in the 79th minute, but Eric Riley made a nice save. The Panthers looked to put the game away in the final minutes with a couple of corner kicks and shots by Shrimpton and Daire O'Riordan. The Miners got the equalizer with 11 seconds left off a free kick. Unnar Ulfarsson launched a ball around 50 yards and it found its way into the back of the net to force overtime.

Davenport needed the winner and got it from Shrimpton at 98:09. O'Riordan took a free kick from around 35 yards and the ball was cleared. Texer took a swipe at the ball and it went to Shrimpton who finished just before the goal line at the left post. Texer finished the game with three assists. DU had nine shots on goal compared to six for Missouri S&T. Riley got the win in goal for DU and made four saves.
