Panthers looking to finish September in style versus Northern Michigan

9/27/2018 11:37:00 AM

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport football team will be attempting to end the month of September undefeated as they host Northern Michigan for homecoming on Saturday at noon. Davenport is currently one of just 22 teams in NCAA Division II without a loss this season. The Panthers are glad to be back home after playing three of their first four games on the road. Davenport has been one of the best turnaround stories in the country after winning just one game last year in their first year of NCAA Division II and GLIAC play.

The Panthers have garnered a lot of attention for their defense, but the offense has really shown signs of improvement. DU has made a lot of their progress with Haiden Majewski as its signal-caller. Majewski came into the opener at Robert Morris in the third quarter and finished the game. He then took over the starting duties when Deondre Ford went down after the second offensive snap against Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Sept. 8. Majewski ranks third in the GLIAC completing 60.6 percent of his passes, up from 50.5 percent last season. He also ranks fourth in the GLIAC with six TD's and is fifth in passing efficiency (132.8). In terms of total offense, DU is averaging 376.3 yards per game in 2018 compared to 229.6 yards per game in 2017.

The Panthers ran their win streak to four games for the first time in school history last week in a 26-10 win at Quincy. DU prevented the Hawks from scoring in the first and fourth quarter and allowed just one touchdown on the opening drive of the second half. The Panthers clinging to a 13-10 lead after that score by the Hawks proceeded to score the game's final 13 points in a span of 10 minutes between the end of the third and beginning of fourth quarter. Michael Catching hauled in a 64-yard touchdown grab from Haiden Majewski with 3:41 left in the third quarter to build a double-digit lead. Chris Ahmed then connected on two chip-shot field goals in the fourth. Majewski was 16-of-25 for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Seth Acda rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries. Nate Couturier caught a team-high five passes for 49 yards. Kye Black earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after his 11-tackle performance. He also had three and a half tackles for a loss of 14 yards including a seven-yard sack.
