Davenport scores in double digits during both games in sweep of Tiffin

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Panthers came into the doubleheader today with Tiffin in second place in the GLIAC standings and held that spot after sweeping the Dragons. Davenport had a great day offensively, scoring in double figures during both games of the doubleheader for the first time this season. In game one the Panthers won 11-9 and then won 12-4 in game two. Alexa Flores and Rachel Griffin were outstanding offensively, while Mallory Teunissen and Ellie Muilenburg had milestone wins.

The first game of the doubleheader was a back and forth offensive battle for all seven innings. The Dragons got on the board first, scoring four runs in the top of the second. Davenport clawed back and to tie and take the lead in the fourth inning. In the third French scored off a sac hit by Pauley and then Flores and Griffin scored off a Griffin homer to right center. The Panthers scored four runs in the fourth. Jewell scored off a Kennedy Crawford double and then Pauley hit a three run homer to center field. Griffin following up Crawford's homer with a two-rune home run to right field, giving DU a 9-4 lead. The Dragons responded by scoring five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at nine each. The game-winning run was scored by Jewell in the bottom of the fifth. She scored off a singled to second base by Rowe. Davenport got a security run by Kelli Nyenhuis in the bottom of the sixth to give them a two-run lead heading into the potential final three outs. Teunissen struck out two in the top of the seventh to close the game.

The Panthers offensive efficiency continued in the second game, while the Dragons sputtered. Davenport took a 7-1 lead after two full innings of play. In the second inning French drove in two runs after she doubled down the left field line and Flores blasted a three run homer to right field. The lead was increased to eight after Davenport scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Flores, Griffin, and Koza all recorded an RBI in the fourth. Tiffin scored two in the top of the fifth to avoid the mercy rule. The mercy rule still came into play when Griffin singled up the middle to score French and Rowe to end the game.
 
Up Next
The Panthers have only four more game remaining in their regular season. Davenport hosts Purdue Northwest on Friday and then Grand Valley State on Monday.
