Panthers earn big sweep of Wayne State

DU won three of four games in their first GLIAC series

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team made an early statement as they took three of four games in the opening GLIAC series against preseason favorite Wayne State at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Panthers (11-9, 3-1) swept a doubleheader on Sunday by scores of 6-0 and 7-6.

Game 1
Andrew Click tossed a complete game, six-hit shutout for the Panthers to improve to 3-0 overall this season. He went seven innings and walked two with seven strikeouts. He tossed 101 pitches and found the strike zone 62 times. Brandon Williams took the loss for Wayne State falling to 2-1 this season. He lasted four innings and allowed five earned runs and six hits. He walked three and fanned five in his outing.

Davenport scored once in the first and then added three in the fourth and two more in the fifth. DU scored on a RBI single by Zac Wilson in the first with two outs. Wilson walked and scored on the next at-bat as Brian Sobieski hit his sixth home run of the season over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead. Brent Showers with two outs also had a RBI double down the left field line scoring Anthony DiPonio. Wilson added two more RBI in the fifth on a double down the right field line scoring Petravicius and Bryant.

Game 2
The second game was back-and-forth the entire time as Wayne State scored two runs apiece in the first, third and fourth innings. Davenport countered with one run in the first and then two in the second, third and fifth innings.

Krystien Johnson-Battilana got the win in relief for the Panthers moving to 3-1 this season. He threw the final three innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts. Sam Traver got the start and went three innings in the no-decision. Traver allowed four earned runs and struck out a pair. Evan Maize also threw one inning in the fourth and gave up a two-run homer to Jacob Finkbeiner.

Nolan Dill, the second pitcher of the game for the Warriors, took the loss going 1.2 innings and allowing one earned run. He walked three and struck out four. Alex Huard went 2-for-4 with a run in the nightcap. Bryant drove in three runs from the ninth spot in the batting order. Oscar Heredia also drove in a run going 1-for-4. Petravicius hit his 11th double of the season. Anthony DiPonio scored three times and drew two walks.
