Panthers drop regular season finale at No. 17 Michigan Tech

Haley Gibbons and Claire Austin each scored nine points

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Davenport women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 24) with a 60-44 loss at No. 17 Michigan Tech. The Huskies managed to outscore the Panthers in every quarter en route to their 23rd win of the season. Davenport ends the regular season with a 8-19 record and were 6-14 during their first season in the GLIAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Huskies scored the first four points but Davenport then scored the next five points to take a 5-4 lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter. Neither team would score for the next three minutes until Elisa Jurmu scored on a layup. DU took a 7-6 lead with 2:21 left but then Michigan Tech scored the last six points of the quarter to take a 12-7 lead. All 12 points for the Huskies were scored off turnovers by the Panthers.
-Michigan Tech maintained a 19-12 lead with 4:17 left in the second quarter when Davenport cut the lead to 21-18 on a layup by Amanda Merz with 2:44 left until halftime. Cassidy Trotter made two free throws and Jurmu scored three points with five seconds left to give the Huskies a 27-20 lead at intermission.
-The Panthers got the first points of the third quarter but could not sustain momentum as the Huskies built their lead to 42-31 with 3:10 left in the quarter on a triple by Brenna Heise. MTU continued their momentum with Heise making two free throws and Kelli Guy nailing a triple to end the quarter. The Huskies appeared in command up 47-32 heading into the final quarter.
-The closest the game got in the fourth was 58-44 with just 45 seconds left on a Courtney McInerney layup. The Panthers shot 33.3 percent in the quarter while Michigan Tech shot 54.5 percent.

INSIDE THE BOX
-Haley Gibbons and Claire Austin scored nine points to lead the team. Gibbons had a career-high for the second straight game. She went 4-of-5 from the floor and also had five rebounds and a career-high four steals. Austin shot 3-of-9 from the floor in 25 minutes.
-Merz led the team with six rebounds and three assists in 30 minutes.
-Davenport was hampered by going 1-of-11 behind the arc including 0-of-6 in the second half.

UP NEXT
-The Panthers will travel to No. 1 Ashland on Wednesday, Feb. 28 for the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals beginning at 5:30 p.m.
