HAMMOND, Ind. - The season came to an end on Friday (Oct. 26) for the men's soccer team who fell 4-3 in overtime at Purdue Northwest. The Panthers finished the season 3-12-2 overall and 2-9-1 in the GLIAC. It was the highest scoring game of the season for the Panthers who scored three or more goals in five matches in 2018.
The Pride got off to a hot start and led 2-0 in the first 13:14 of the match. Isaiah Nieves scored his sixth of the season after a poor kick by goalkeeper
Eric Riley went directly to him and he dribbled forward briefly into space before shooting from around 14 yards to the lower right corner. Purdue Northwest scored just 1:23 later as Matt Bahena made a run through the middle and struck the ball with his left foot to the top right corner from around 22 yards.
Davenport had a quick answer just three minutes later as
Evan Marquess delivered a left-footed cross from left wing to the head of
Brogan Shrimpton on the back side of the play. Shrimpton's header from about 13 yards went top left for his eighth of the season.
Alec Morris got the chance to play in goal directly after Shrimpton's goal.
Jonathan Harkin gave Purdue Northwest a 3-1 lead in the 51st minute with assists by Grant Ugarte and Brandon Rivera. DU cut the lead to 3-2 in the 61st minute as Marquess got his first of the season.
Daire O'Riordan had a beautiful assist with a ball past defenders in the air as Marquess was streaking to the goal. Shrimpton tied the game on a penalty kick in the 87th minute for his ninth goal of the season and 37th and final goal of his great career.
The Pride needed just 1:28 into overtime for the winner as Jules Cailiau made a run to the left post as Bahena crossed from the right wing on the money for an eight-yard shot inside the left post for his first of the season. All four of the Pride shots on goal found the back of the net. DU finished with six shots on goal and 12 in total.
Notes: DU was 1-5-2 in overtime this season...The team played 10 one-goal matches this season and could not pull out a win in the last nine of them...Shrimpton's 37 goals ranks third all-time while his 83 points is fourth...He was 3-of-3 in penalty kicks this season after not attempting one in his first two seasons.
