Second Quarter the difference in loss to #18 Michigan Tech

DU was outscored 24-4 in the second quarter falling to 7-11 overall, 5-6 GLIAC

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Davenport women's basketball team had to travel to Lake Superior State on Thursday (Jan. 25) to play a rescheduled GLIAC contest against No. 18 Michigan Tech. The Huskies came away with an 82-54 win over the Panthers and the second quarter was the main reason. Michigan Tech (15-3, 9-2 GLIAC) outscored Davenport (7-11, 5-6 GLIAC) by a 24-4 margin in the quarter. DU was outscored by a combined eight points in the other three quarters.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
-It was a very entertaining first quarter as the Huskies led 17-13 at the conclusion. Davenport shot 44.4 percent (4-of-9) while Michigan Tech shot 43.8 percent (7-of-16). A total of six different Huskies scored in the first quarter and they recorded four steals. Davenport committed six turnovers which were turned into six points by MTU. Both teams combined to go 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Emily Severn went 2-of-2 in the quarter and played all 10 minutes.
-The second quarter is when the Huskies caught fire shooting 71.4 percent (10-of-14) and made their only three-point attempt. Brenna Heise scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting in the quarter in just five minutes. DU committed seven more turnovers which the Huskies converted into eight points. MTU also went inside with regularity scoring 14 points in the paint. Davenport went 2-of-13 from the floor and did not score until the 3:07 mark of the quarter on a Jenna Falkenberg layup. The basket ended a 7:51 scoreless period which began late in the first quarter.
-The deficit for the Panthers did not get lower than 22 points in the third quarter and MTU led 66-39. The Panthers regained some offensive rhythm going 9-of-17 from the floor as Claire Austin scored seven points on 3-of-4 shooting.
-The Davenport reserves got some quality minutes in the fourth quarter and scored 15 points. Ashley Cline scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in the quarter. Davenport had a lead in the contest for 2:27 of total game time.

INSIDE THE BOX
-Davenport finished shooting 37.3 percent from the floor (19-of-51) including 4-of-11 behind the arc. Michigan Tech shot 53.2 percent overall (33-of-62) and were a stellar 7-of-12 from behind the arc. Both teams fared well at the charity stripe as DU was 12-of-14 and MTU was 9-of-10.
-The final tally for points off turnovers was 28-7 in favor of MTU. The Huskies also outscored the Panthers, 38-22, in the painted area.
-Elizabeth Kelliher led all scorers with 18 points for the Huskies. Heise added 14 points on 6-of-7 from the floor.
-Austin led the team in scoring for the second time this season with 10 points on 4-of-7 from the floor. Severn scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds. Falkenberg led the team with six rebounds in 18 minutes. Cline finished with a season-high seven points on 3-of-3 shooting in nine minutes. Amanda Merz dished out six assists to lead the squad.

UP NEXT
-The Panthers will look to snap a three-game skid when they travel to Wayne State (13-4, 8-3 GLIAC) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip in Detroit. The Panthers defeated the Warriors 43-41 back on December 16 in their previous meeting this season.
