Davenport falls in GLIAC match vs. Northwood University

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers held the Timberwolves to only 57 points on the night but struggled to score the basketball themselves in tough loss. Davenport shot 19/57 (33.3%) on the night and missed 21 three pointers. The Timberwolves out-rebounded DU 49-34 on the night and stole the ball eight times. Davenport needs to get a win Saturday at Saginaw Valley State to end this four game losing streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Davenport jumped on top of the Timberwolves early and built up a 12-point lead just over 12 minutes into the game. The Panthers played stellar defense for a 10-minute period. The Timberwolves went scoreless for 10 minutes and five seconds during the middle part of the first half. Northwood got hot quickly from the field as they dropped 17 unanswered points over a four minute and 46 second time frame. Avery Hudson gave a huge momentum boost to the Panthers late in the half as he hit a three in transition with 41 seconds on the clock and then nailed a buzzer beating half court shot with one second in the half. The back to back threes by Hudson gave DU a 26-25 lead after 20 minutes of play.
 
Northwood had the better opening to the second half, they created a six point lead a little under three minutes into the half. The Timberwolves led all the way up until there was just 1:45 remaining on the clock. Delano Smith hit a jump shot to tie the game 52-52. After the bucket by Smith DU would be held scoreless for the remainder of the game and fall to the Timberwolves.
 
Smith led the Panthers in scoring with 13 points, Hudson scored nine and dished out five assists. John McCloud shot the best from the field, scoring eight points on 3/4 from the field and grabbed a team high eight rebounds. The Panthers shot 8/29 from beyond the arc and just 33.3% from the field.

UP NEXT
The Panthers travel to University Center, Mich. on Saturday to take on GLIAC foe Saginaw Valley State for the first time this season. The game is scheduled for 6:00 pm in the E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
