MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team is experiencing how challenging it can be in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after a 1-1 double overtime tie at Northwood University on Friday afternoon. The slim gap between the top-half teams in the league was on display again after Davenport was looking to rebound after a 1-0 loss to preseason No. 3 Tiffin at home last Sunday. The Timberwolves were No. 4 in the preseason poll while the Panthers were No. 2 and gained two first-place votes. Davenport with the tie stands at 4-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the GLIAC during their first season in NCAA Division II and the GLIAC.
This contest was played in sweltering heat in Midland at Dean Field with temperatures in the 90's. The teams played to a scoreless first half and Northwood held a 5-2 edge in shots including 2-0 on goal. Davenport got their offense going in the second half as
Brogan Shrimpton scored his GLIAC-leading 13th goal of the season at 59:25. He scored on a cross from
Yovany Duran coming in from the right side. The Timberwolves got the equalizer via a penalty kick at 72:55 as
Stephen Carroll was handed a yellow card. James Vaughan buried the chance for his fourth goal of the season.
Neither team could break the deadlock in the next 28 minutes. NU had a shot on goal in the first overtime while DU had a shot on goal early in the second extra session. Both goalkeepers made three saves,
Aaron Orban for Davenport and Corbin Cecchini for Northwood, in 110 minutes. The final total was four shots on goal for both squads.
