Panthers surge past Madonna 10-5 in opening game of WHAC Tournament

Anthony DiPonio and Jeremy Vasquez each had three RBI

LIMA, Ohio - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament got underway on Sunday (May 7) at the University of Northwestern Ohio and Davenport picked up a 10-5 win over Madonna in their first game. Davenport found themselves down 3-0 early in the second inning but then score runs in the next four innings and hold out for their 15th straight win (39-13). The Panthers have now won three straight against the Crusaders in the WHAC Tournament.

Anthony DiPonio and Jeremy Vasquez each had three RBI in the contest and that offense helped back starter Grant Wolfram who had a rough outing. Despite going five innings and allowing 11 hits and five earned runs, he got the win improving to 13-1. Wolfram did strike out six and walked one. Jonathan Cheshire saved the day out of the bullpen throwing the final four innings. He did not allow a hit or walk and fanned five Crusaders in a dominant performance for his 10th save of the season and 34th of his career.

DiPonio went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three singles. He had a RBI hit in the fourth and also a two-RBI single in the fifth. Vasquez went 2-for-4 with a run scored collecting a RBI single in the second and also a two-RBI single in the fifth. Brian Sobieski had one hit in five at-bats but it went over the fence for his 10th homer of the season to leadoff the second inning after DU fell behind 3-0. Jake Bozzo went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly. Davenport committed zero errors which just builds upon their ranking of second in the NAIA in fielding percentage.
