DU beats Cornerstone for 10th straight win

Jeremy Vasquez and Cameron Bair each had 2 RBI in 8-1 win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team ran their win streak to 10 with an 8-1 victory at Cornerstone on Friday in game one of a three-game weekend series against their rival. The Panthers are peaking at the right time running their record to 34-13 overall and 22-6 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Golden Eagles could only muster three hits against DU ace Grant Wolfram and bullpen anchor Jonathan Cheshire. CU is now 22-25 overall and 13-13 in the WHAC heading into tomorrow's doubleheader which will begin at 11 a.m. at De Witt Field.

Davenport got things going in the top of the second as Jake Bozzo hit his second long ball of the season to right for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers added a run in the fourth as Cameron Bair reached on an error and Bozzo followed with a single up the middle. Luke Lalumia who pinch ran for Bair moved to third on the base hit. Jeremy Vasquez walked on four pitches to load the sacks but the Golden Eagles limited the damage by allowing just one run on a bases-loaded walk to Anthony DiPonio.

Jonny Abbadusky got Cornerstone on the board with one out in the fourth with a solo blast to left for his third of the season. DU answered with three runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Vasquez had a RBI single through the left side and Matt Hoge was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Austin Petravicius also had a sacrifice fly to left scoring Bozzo in the inning.

Wolfram did not allow a hit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before handing the ball to Cheshire in the eighth. He gave up a leadoff single to start the eighth but got a double play and strikeout to end the inning. DU put the game out of reach with three runs in the ninth. Back-to-back walks started the threat and then Bair lined a double down the right field line to score a pair. Vasquez then singled home a run for the team's eighth run.

Wolfram improved to 11-1 going seven innings and striking out six. Cheshire tossed the final two innings and struck out three. Kyle Herrick took the loss (3-6) for Cornerstone yielding four earned runs in 4.1 innings. Brett Shure finished up the final 4.2 innings and allowed four hits and three earned runs. Brian Sobieski went 2-for-3 with a walk for Davenport. Bozzo finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Vasquez also went 2-for-4 with a walk.
