Panthers pounce on Cougars in doubleheader sweep

Pete Zeimis got the win in game one and Jonathan Cheshire won the nightcap

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team played a doubleheader on Tuesday against Cleary University and improved to 4-0 all-time against the Cougars with a 13-3 and 8-4 sweep at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Davenport is now 29-13 overall and are 17-1 at home this season.

GAME 1
Pete Zeimis took the ball for the Panthers and got his first win of the campaign in a runaway. Zeimis went six innings and allowed six hits in an 89-pitch effort with 62 strikes. He allowed three earned runs with no walks and five strikeouts. Brady VanSloten cleaned up in the seventh and allowed one hit and one walk before closing the door. DU scored seven runs in the second inning and never looked back as they chased starter Jake Berg out of the game.

Austin Petravicius had a pair of doubles in four at-bats driving in four runs and scoring twice. Aaron Fadden and Matt Hoge also had a double for the Panthers as Fadden went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Hoge went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Brian Sobieski hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season and finished with three RBI. Anthony DiPonio also collected a pair of RBI and drew a walk.

GAME 2
Cleary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Adam Biss but DU responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and four more runs in the second for a 5-2 lead. The Panthers also chipped away with single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. DU had 13 hits in this one including five doubles and four triples. Nolan Bryant was magnificent in the leadoff spot going 4-for-4 and was just a homer shy of the cycle. Nolan Page went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle drove in two runs and had his 10th double of the season.

Sobieski went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI while also recording his sixth triple and 11th and 12th doubles of the year. Biss lasted 2.2 innings and allowed three runs and seven hits. Jonathan Cheshire finished out the game going 4.1 innings and getting the win (5-3). He allowed just one run with no walks and six punchouts. He also lowered his season ERA to 2.16 in his senior season.
