CALEDONIA, Mich. - The final two seconds was the difference between one or three points in the GLIAC standings on Sunday as the Davenport men's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 double overtime win over Northwood. The Panthers have peaked at the right time winners of four of their last five matches. Davenport handed the Timberwolves their only conference loss of the season in dramatic fashion. As the regular season winds down, the Panthers are now solidly third in the GLIAC with 19 points (6-3-1). Northwood and Saginaw Valley are now both 7-1-1 and have 22 points. DU has clinched a spot in the GLIAC Tournament and could continue to climb as they host Saginaw Valley on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.
Davenport struck first just 38 seconds into the match to give the Panthers added confidence.
Brogan Shrimpton scored his 16th of the season on a pass from
Nick Keyamo. Shrimpton had the one-timer off the cross near the 18-yard box. Northwood totaled six shots in the first half and Davenport's only shot on goal was the Shrimpton goal.
Northwood kept the pressure on in the second half as they had six shots on goal while the Panthers only forced one save. The Timberwolves got the tying goal at 76:58 as Connor Cole scored his second of the season on a bouncing ball near the six-yard box.
Davenport had the only shot on goal in the first overtime and brought more pressure with a 3-1 edge in shots. It looked like the teams were heading towards another tie which happened earlier this season in Midland. DU got a corner kick with 15 seconds left in the match and the magical goal by
Daire O'Riordan gave the home team their ninth win of the season. He scored his second of the season as he floated the ball over the defense with two ticks left.
"It was a good battle between two good teams," said Davenport head coach
Chris Hughes. "Our team chose to battle in the two overtimes and I felt momentum tilting our way when Daire came up clutch in the end. It was going to be one of those games that whoever made the final mistake wouldn't find three points. I'm happy our boys found their three points. We will enjoy it today and prepare for the next battle tomorrow."
