GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's tennis team finished their season with a 13-14 record after going 1-1 in the WHAC Tournament on Friday. The Panthers defeated Lawrence Tech 5-1 in the quarterfinals and then fell 5-0 to Northwestern Ohio in the semifinals.
The Panthers won two of three in doubles against the Blue Devils in the noon matchup. Sergio Lopez and Javier Alvarez got the win at one doubles for LTU by a score of 8-3.
Kevin Slagh and
Haja Denise needed a little extra to get past Mason Wenzel and Jan Horstkoetter by a 9-7 result. JP van Antwerpen and
Michael Digby won 8-2 at three doubles.
Matthew Boyle was in the third set when the match's fifth point was recorded.
Matthew McClurg dropped his first set and won his second when the match concluded. Digby won 6-1, 6-2 at six singles over Vincent Colarossi. Slagh needed three sets to defeat Wenzel at five singles (6-2, 1-6, 6-3). Van Antwerpen also won 6-2, 6-4 at three singles for a big point.
UNOH got a battle from the Panthers particularly at three doubles as van Antwerpen and Digby fell 9-7. The other matches were 8-4 for the Racers. Boyle fell 6-0, 6-1 against Rik van Gerwin at two singles. Justin Baciu won at love in four singles over Denise.
