GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 15 Davenport baseball team got a bases-loaded passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to escape with a 3-2 win over Olivet College on Tuesday night. It was a rather quick nine innings lasting just over two hours and was the last non-conference game of the season for Davenport (35-10).
The Comets (5-26) got the jump on Davenport with single runs in the first and third innings. It took until the sixth inning for the Panthers to get on the board and tie the game at 2-2. Joseph Crosby kept the Panthers off balance for the first five innings before allowing the two runs in the sixth.
Travis Bolin had an infield single with one out and
Brian Sobieski plated the first run on a RBI double.
Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle then singled through the right side to score Sobieski.
The Comets went quietly in the final three innings while Davenport stranded two runners in the eighth. Lefty Ryan Roeske came into pitch for Olivet in the ninth and hit Brent Showers with the first pitch.
Austin Brandt pinch ran and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jeremy Vasquez.
Connor Seymour was intentionally walked and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball.
Brandon Cable then was intentionally walked to load the bases. Bolin struck out looking on a 1-2 pitch on the outside corner and
Matt Priebe stepped to the plate. Connor Murney allowed another passed ball which went to the screen allowing Brandt to score the winning run.
Priebe went 2-for-3 while Larkin-Guilfoyle was 2-for-3 with a walk. Showers playing in his first game at catcher had a double.
Corey Sessions (5-1) tossed the final two innings for Davenport to get the win. He allowed one hit and struck out three.
Caleb Leach,
Michael Meade and
Alex Schuiling also pitched a scoreless inning for DU. The DU pitching staff recorded 11 strikeouts and just two walks on the night.
