Crusaders Pull Off Sweep of Panthers

LIVONIA, Mich. – Madonna University hit a one out two-run single in the seventh inning of their double header with DU to hand the Panthers a sweep Saturday afternoon 6-5 and 7-6. The Panthers now stand at 31-10 overall in 2016 with a 11-3 mark in the WHAC.

Madonna took over the lead in game one with a two-run first inning, but Davenport was able to respond in the top of the second inning to tie the game. Sarah Schneidenbach laid down a sacrifice squeeze that scored Lindsay Tasma from third base and McKenzie Rowe followed with an RBI single that scored Lauren French. The Crusader offense stayed hot as they pushed four more runs across the plate to take a 6-4 lead over the Panthers headed into the fifth inning. Carli SanMillan would help DU cut the deficit to 6-5 with an RBI single that scored Sarah Wallick, but this would be the last scoring play for DU as their comeback fell short.

Emily Maves (17-4) took her first loss in conference play in 2016 with two innings pitched and five earned runs allowed. Mallory Teunissen relieved Maves in the third inning to pitch four innings with two strikeouts and one run allowed.

DU then carried a 6-5 lead in game two heading into the seventh inning as they scored two runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Rowe led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, two RBI and two runs scored. Alyssa Eastman had a 2-for-4 game and Lauren French batted 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

The Crusaders made their comeback in their final at bat as they scored two runs to comeback for a 7-6 win. Teunissen forced the leadoff batter to ground out, but Madonna followed with a single and a double that left runners on second and third with only one out. DU intentionally walked the next batter before the Crusaders knocked a single up the middle that scored two runs and won Madonna the game. Teunissen (13-4) pitched 6.1 innings to take the decision with two strikeouts and seven runs allowed.
