GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers opened up a five-goal advantage Wednesday evening and had to fight off a Lawrence Tech second half comeback to take out the Blue Devils. The Panthers earned their 16-12 victory to take the regular season sweep of No. 6 LTU as they advanced their 2016 record to 10-1, 9-0.
DU held a slight 5-4 advantage in the first half as LTU would not let the Panther offense get any momentum.
Jessica Lemcke and
Hanna Bush then jump started the potent DU offense as they combined for five points over the remainder of the first half. The Panthers would go on to outscore the Blue Devils 5-1 over the end of the first half behind two goals from Lemcke while Bush scored one goal and assisted on two others as the Panthers went on to secure a 10-5 halftime advantage.
The Panthers would then see a battle in the second half as Lawrence Tech scored six goals while DU found the back of the net twice. The Blue Devils cut the DU lead to 12-11 with 10:29 left in the first half and forced a DU timeout. The Panthers came out of the timeout and responded immediately with four unanswered goals to take control of the game once again.
Brooke Knoll scored twice while
Sara Kuzava and Lemcke each tallied a goal to give DU a lead that they would not surrender. The Panther defense locked down the LTU attack led by
Sydney Gray as she recorded five caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Hannah Maroe totaled four caused turnovers and two ground balls and
Maeve Sweeney recorded five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Mariah Newton led DU with six draw controls and also totaled five ground balls.
Samantha Powers (9-1) earned the victory in goal for the Panthers with six saves.
