Panthers End Spring Trip with a Pair of 2-0 Setbacks

LEESBURG, Fla. – DU entered their final day of their spring trip Saturday morning with a double header against No. 22 Bellevue University and No. 10 Saint Xavier University. The Panthers saw a pair of defensive battles as runs were hard to come by all morning long, and DU fell by 2-0 scores in each outcome.

Bellevue took advantage of the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first inning as they capitalized on three-straight walks from DU with a two RBI single. Freshman pitcher Mallory Teunissen responded from that point on as she went on to shutout the Bruins over the remaining six innings of her complete game performance and held Bellevue to just two runs while striking out nine batters.

DU could not capitalize during their at bats as they spread seven hits over the game, but failed to see a base runner cross home plate.  The Panthers saw their best offensive opportunity of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Sarah Schneidenbach began the rally with two outs with a single to left field. Carli SanMillan followed with a single down the right field line that advanced Schneidenbach to third and she followed by stealing second. The two-out rally came up just short as a ground out to the short stop ended the threat and left two runners in scoring position.

Tuenissen (5-1) took the decision in the circle for the Panthers and saw her first loss of the season. Bruins pitcher Kelli Fisher (1-3) tossed a complete game with six strikeouts to earn the victory.

The second game saw the Panthers in a pitcher's duel with No. 10 Saint Xavier that took nine innings to find a winner. DU starting pitcher Emily Maves pitched the complete game with six strikeouts and allowed just one earned run. Her counterpart Nicole Nonnemacher tossed a complete game, struck out nine, and held the Panthers without a hit.

The teams fought to extra innings before the Panthers saw their chance to take the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning. McKenzie Rowe began the inning by reaching on a fielder's choice that advanced Lauren French to third base as she just beat out the throw to give DU runners at the corners. Rowe stole second with Haley Obetts at the plate and DU had runners on second and third with still no outs recorded. Obetts was retired by striking out, and Schneidenbach followed to the plate. A failed suicide squeeze attempt resulted in Lauren French being picked off at home plate with Rowe advancing to third. Schneidenbach ended the inning with a strike out as the teams advanced to the ninth inning.

Saint Xavier took the lead in the top of the ninth as a leadoff double knocked in the runner placed on second base as the Cougars took the 1-0 lead. SXU then sacrificed the runner to third with a bunt and scored her on a sacrifice fly as DU trailed 2-0. Maves (7-2) took the decision in the circle with a complete game and six strikeouts. Nonnemacher (2-0) earned the victory for Saint Xavier as she threw the complete game and struck out nine batters to record a no-hitter.

DU could not rally in their final at bat as they dropped their second game of the day to end their spring trip at a 11-3 record and dropped their overall record to 13-4.
