GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Panthers took on Ferris State University Tuesday afternoon in a home double header. DU earned the sweep of the Bulldogs as they advanced their overall record to 20-7 on the season.
Junior
Alyssa Eastman powered DU early as she hit her eighth home run of the season on a three-run shot to left field in the first inning. DU would add two runs in the second and pair of insurance runs in the fourth as they climbed out to a 7-4 lead over the Bulldogs. Ferris cut the DU lead to as little as one run, 5-4, in the third inning when they hit a three-run home run to left field. Eastman would go on to record a 2-for-4 game with five RBI and one run scored.
Starting pitcher
Emily Maves (11-3) shut the door as she maintained the Panther advantage with her complete game performance. She earned the victory behind 10 strikeouts while walking just two batters. Maves sealed the victory for DU in the top of the seventh as she pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out situation.
Eastman then sparked DU early again in game two as she hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first.
Haley Obetts followed with a two-run home run, her second of the season, to left field as DU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning. The Bulldogs would fight back in the third inning as they pushed four runs across the plate following a pair of home runs.
Davenport would take over the lead again at 9-6 lead heading into the sixth inning before Ferris put together a three-run sixth as a pair of doubles and a DU error that tied the game at 9-9. Davenport would battle the Bulldogs to extra innings and DU would see a walk off victory in the bottom of the eighth.
Aby Brambila led off the inning with a double and advanced to third base on a fly ball from
Nicole Vitale.
Lauren French then came to the plate with two outs and hit the game winning single down the third base line and gave DU the 10-9 win in dramatic fashion.
Eastman went 1-for-5 with 3 RBI and French went 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Panthers accumulated 14 hits as a team with four players having multi-hit games.
Mallory Teunissen (8-3) earned the decision in the circle for DU with a complete game and four strike outs.
