AUBURNDALE, Fla. –
Corbin Clouse pitched 4.2 innings of shutout ball and
Zack Sardellitti went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI in Davenport's 2-1 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday. Clouse ran into trouble in the second and third inning as the Cougars loaded the bases in both innings but could not score. Clouse fanned leadoff hitter Corey Gould to end the second and induced a groundout by Yanni Patten to end the third.
Davenport broke through in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.
Travis Bolin drew a one-out walk and Sardellitti doubled to left center with two outs to plate Bolin. DU added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as
Dominic Albanese singled to start the inning. Sardellitti again doubled to right center this time with two outs as Albanese scored from first for a 2-0 lead.
Caleb Leach entered in the top of the fifth after a pair of two-out walks knocked Clouse out of the game. Leach threw into the seventh inning and with one out gave up a solo homer to Riley Swanson to cut the lead to 2-1.
Alex Schuiling entered with two runners on base and got Trenton Wood to fly out with both runners in scoring position.
Jonathan Cheshire entered for Schuiling in the top of the eighth and walked the first man he faced to put runners on first and second. He then got Swanson to fly out to right field to keep the lead. Cheshire then retired the Cougars in order in the ninth for the four-out save, his fifth save this season.
Albanese and
Connor Seymour had the other hits for Davenport who managed five off MVNU starter Lucas Daugherty who went eight innings and struck out four in a tough loss.
