PULASKI, Tenn. - The Panthers finished opening day with a game against the host Martin Methodist College Red Hawks. MMC started the game with back-to-back home runs, and held their lead for the remainder of the game as DU fell to 1-1 on the season.
The bottom of the first inning saw the Red Hawks take a 2-0 lead following a pair of solo home runs to left center field. MMC would take this momentum to the bottom of the second as they scored three more runs, and the Panthers found themselves in a 5-0 hole early in the game.
Alyssa Eastman would make the start in the circle for the Panthers and pitch two innings before
Mallory Teunissen took relief to start the third inning. Teunissen came into the game and slowed the Red Hawk offense with seven strike outs over four innings pitched.
The DU offense would see a spark in the top of the fourth as they strung three hits together to get a run across the plate. Eastman singled through the left side, and
Alyssa Koziol followed with a single through the right side of the infield.
Lindsay Tasma then knocked in Eastman with a single through the left side and DU cut the MMC lead to 5-1. The DU offense would stall over their remaining at bats and the Red Hawks manufactured an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as they secured a 6-1 win over the Panthers.
Alyssa Eastman finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Koziol went 1-for-3 and Tasma was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Eastman (0-1) took the decision in the circle for DU with two innings pitched, one strike out and five runs allowed. The Panthers will finish their play in the Martin Methodist Meltdown tomorrow (Feb. 13) with a game against Grace College at 3 p.m. ET.
