DETROIT, Mich. – The Panthers improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play after they defeated Marygrove College 84-70. The Mustangs made things a little difficult for Davenport as the half time score was 35-31 in the Panthers favor. Davenport had a strong second half to cruise to victory and earn their second conference win of the year.
Multiple different Panthers contributed during the first half as Davenport was searching to find a lineup that would get things going. Ten different players saw the court during the first half for Davenport. The Panthers jumped out to an early 9-2 lead after a jumper by
Khadim Dieng with 15:15 remaining in the first half. Marygrove fought back and tied the game at 16 a piece with 12 minutes left in the half.
Robbie Bramhill came off the bench and provided an offensive spark as he scored nine points on 4/7 from the field.
Javon Haines and
Kevin Rich also led Davenport in the scoring category during the opening half. Haines had eight points on 4/6 from the field and Rich had ten points while grabbing seven rebounds.
Nick Gamble was a great facilitator as he had four assists to lead DU.
The second half saw the Davenport offensive come to life, the Panthers scored 49 points during a very efficient 20 minutes of basketball. Bramhill found his stroke during the second half. He checked in at the 16:58 mark and sunk four trey balls during the next 15 minutes of basketball. Davenport was sharing the ball so well during the second half, every shot seemed so wide open for the Panthers. They tallied 12 assists on 14 made field goals during the half.
Gamble, Rich and Bramhill were big time contributors during tonight's match-up. Rich tallied his second straight double double after scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He shot a very efficient 8/14 from the field as well. Bramhill was a spark of offense, he had 21 points and eight rebounds. He was 4/4 from three in the second half and 5/8 for the game. Gamble did a little bit of everything tonight as he had ten points, eight assists, four rebounds and three assists.
The team will prepare to take on Great Lakes Christian on Friday and Dordt College on Saturday. Both games will be played at the DU Student Center.
