GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's lacrosse team was back in action on Saturday evening as they hosted Indiana Tech in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship game. Davenport was able to win their second straight WHAC Tournament Championship with an 11-5 win over Indiana Tech, as
Tara Pluger led the way with two goals and an assist. The Panthers will now head into the NWLL National Tournament starting next Thursday in Belleville, Ill.
Pluger led the Davenport offense with a pair of goals and one assist, while
Kaitlyn Lowden and
Taylor Balch each recorded two goals of their own. DU had five different players score one goal apiece as
Sara Kuzava,
Jessica Lemcke,
Bridget Zuidgeest,
Paige VanWieren and
Hanna Bush all tallied a goal for the Panthers, while
Samantha Powers made seven saves in the game.
Davenport got off to a strong start in the first half as Lowden and Balch gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead with 25:50 left in the first half, but the Warriors were able cut the Panther lead to one just moments later as they scored their only goal of the first half. DU closed the half on a 4-0 run as the Panthers had six different goal scorers in the first half to take a 6-1 into halftime.
The Panthers were able to stretch their lead to 8-1 as Pluger and Lowden continued the Davenport run, but Indiana Tech start to make their comeback as they rattled off the next three goals to make it an 8-4 game with 19:18 left in the second half. Davenport was able to counter with a 3-0 run of their own to take an 11-4 lead with 6:44 in the game, and the Warriors scored just 40 seconds later, but they could not get any closer as the Panthers went on to win 11-5.
Davenport will now await to see who their opponent will be in the first round of the NWLL National Tournament next Thursday in Belleville, Ill.
