12-Run Sixth Inning Enough for No. 19 Panthers to Complete Sweep

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The No. 19 Davenport baseball team racked up 21 hits, including eight during a 12-run sixth inning, to rout Union (Ky.) 17-5 to complete the three-game non-conference sweep Sunday afternoon.

The dozen runs scored in the sixth is the most since the Panthers (3-0) put that many on the board against Rochester at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex last season. In addition, it is only the seventh time in program history Davenport had tallied more than 20 hits in a game, with the last time being at Trine last year.

Zac Wilson had a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate. He also drove in four runs and stretch for a double. Cam Cooper also had a three-hit performance.

Matt Priebe and Jonathan Palumbo both swung for the fence on the afternoon. Priebe hit a two-run shot in the fifth while Palumbo delivered a 3-run, pinch-hit home run in the sixth.

Starting left-hander Brendan Benders struck out four batters and allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work. Alex Schuiling (1-0) picked up the win after throwing 1 1/3 innings of relief. He also struck out three.

Davenport makes a return trip to Kentucky to play a four-game series with ninth-ranked Georgetown. The Panthers and Tigers meet Friday at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.

Post-Game Notes
Davenport improves to 5-4 in the all-time series with Union…The Panthers 3-0 start to the season since the inaugural campaign in 2009 when they started 11-0
