No. 19 Baseball Bats Pound No. 11 Embry-Riddle for Mercy-Rule Victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Davenport baseball team knocked in five runs on five hits and an error in the first inning, which made it enough for the 19th-ranked Panthers to upset No. 11 Embry-Riddle 16-4 by mercy rule Wednesday night.

Jerry Ferris had a stellar performance in his first appearance on the mound in nearly a year. After missing a majority of last season due to Tommy John surgery, the right-hander tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing the four runs in the fourth and fifth innings and striking out six with four looking.

Davenport (7-1) would put more than one run on the board in the first four innings. In fact, all but one batter in the starting lineup tallied a hit on Embry-Riddle starter Clayton Wagner, who only lasted 2 1/3 innings allowing 10 runs.

One-two hitters Cody Greear and Celetijn had done their job by getting on base to setup the heart of the Panthers lineup. Brendan Bender, Matt Priebe and Zack Sardellitti combined for eight RBI. Connor Seymour also came up big with his second two-run home run in three days.

The Panthers will play two, 9-inning games on Thursday at different locations. They will first make a visit to Chain O' Lakes Park for a contest with Goshen (Ind.) at 1 p.m. before traveling to Babson Park for a night game with Webber International at 7 p.m.
