GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The women's soccer team played their final regular season home game Saturday evening against No. 16 Siena Heights University. The Panthers gave the nationally ranked Saints all they could handle as they pushed them into two overtimes.
DU limited the opportunities for Siena as they held the Saints scoreless through regulation. The Panther offense put consistent pressure on the Saints and saw their best chance of the first half sail just wide as
Shameeka Fishley missed her mark by inches. The Panther defense held the Saints to one shot on goal in the first half. Senior goal keeper
Tara Gessler held the Saints scoreless in the second period as she recorded six saves and DU forced overtime.
The first overtime period saw the Panthers record one shot while the Saints tallied four, but the teams remained scoreless. The teams played 4:36 into the second overtime period when the Saints connected on a ball played into the box that beat Gessler and held off the Panther upset bid.
Gessler recorded nine saves and drew the decision in goal. Fishley and
Alayna Hilgendorf each tallied two shots to lead the Panther offense that totaled eight for the match.
