GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Davenport women's basketball team has allowed 51.6 points in 13 games played this season. Although it was an exhibition game for the second-ranked Panthers, they held NCAA Division I Green Bay to just over that amount in a 53-40 loss at the Phoenix's Kress Events Center Saturday.
Â
Despite the loss, the Panthers held the Phoenix (10-3) to a season-low in points scored, matching the same number then-No. 3 UCONN allowed in Green Bay's 89-53 defeat to the Huskies late November. Green Bay averaged 69.7 points going into the game against the Panthers.
Â
Both teams had identical numbers on paper. They both shot 35.6 percent from the field and had made six from 3-point range. Green Bay had a 17-14 advantage in turnovers but dominated the rebounding department 44-29 overall, 18-6 offensively.
Â
Daina Grazulis led the effort for the Panthers with 13 points while
Kayleigh VanKeulen finished with 11.
Â
Merhrynn Kraker led the Phoenix with 14 points and went to the glass seven times. Sam Terry also added a dozen points off the bench for Green Bay.
Â
Davenport got off to a cold start offensively, going 0-for-9 within the first eight minutes of play. But a
Brittany Johnson layup set up a 13-2 run and bring the Phoenix's lead to 16-13 with six minutes left in the first half. A late Green Bay run, however, allowed the Phoenix to take a 24-13 lead at halftime.
Â
The Phoenix led by as many as 18 with 4:47 left but the Panthers did bring it down to 10 in the next 2:36.
Â
The Panthers go back on the record and will finish the 14 remaining regular-season games in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play starting with Marygrove Monday at 6 p.m. It is also the first of three games road games played on the upcoming week.
