COLUMBIA, Ky. – Davenport's seventh-ranked women's soccer team had to play defense the entire night but it was enough for the Panthers to walk away with a scoreless result against No. 3 Lindsey Wilson Saturday night.
Â
The Panthers (6-1-1) wrap up non-conference play going 2-1-1 against NAIA Top 25 teams and will now begin their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title defense Saturday at Lawrence Tech.
Â
Coming off a similar result against No. 13 Martin Methodist 24 hours ago, Lindsey Wilson tried getting out of its scoreless woes against Davenport, but the Panthers defense led by
Tara Gessler kept the Blue Raiders frustrated. Gessler showed brilliance between the posts against the Blue Raiders (3-1-2), making seven saves out of 25 Lindsey Wilson shots. Davenport also caught break twice in the second half after two shots hit the crossbar.
Â
Davenport's only two shots in the match were really close.
Letesha Cannonier delivered the first shot in the 43
rd minute but was stopped by Blue Raider keeper Johanna Henricksson. The second chance came in the 52
nd minute when
Tam Grzybowski made a beautiful cross from midfield to
Shameeka Fishley outside the penalty mark but the sophomore's shot went just off the right post.
Â
Although the Blue Raiders were awarded 10 corner kicks, Davenport's only one came within the final 20 seconds of the match. Grzybowski sent it into the crowded penalty box but was cleared by Lindsey Wilson's defense.
