ST.CHARLES, Mo. – The Davenport men's rugby team traveled to St. Charles, Mo. to face Lindenwood in the D1A National Tournament Quarterfinals. Four different Panthers tallied a try and Davenport also had a penalty try, but the Panthers dropped the match to Mid-South Conference foe Lindenwood, 64-32. Davenport concludes their 2013-14 campaign with a 6-9 record and went 1-1 in their first appearance in the D1A National Tournament.
Davenport started the game with a try from
William Dattulo to take the early 5-0 lead. In the eighth minute,
Brady Gent had an opportunity to put the Panthers up by two scores, but Gent missed the penalty kick. Lindenwood came right back to score a try and followed it up with a conversion to take a 7-5 lead. After the Lions took the lead, they then scored the next three tries to take a 26-5 lead.
Gent stopped the 26-0 run by Lindenwood with a successful penalty kick, but Lindenwood scored a try to take a 31-8 lead.
Kevin Lydon scored a try right before halftime, as the Panthers cut the Lions lead to 31-13.
In the second half, Davenport looked to make a comeback as Recce Czarnecki opened the scoring the second half with a try, but Lindenwood rebounded quickly and scored to take a 38-18 lead. Davenport was awarded a penalty try and Gent was successful on the conversion to cut into the Lindenwood lead.
The Lions scored two more tries after the penalty try to regain momentum.
Roman Mares scored a try part way through the second half, but Lindenwood closed out the game scoring the final two tries of the game to win 64-32.
The Panthers conclude their season with a 6-9 overall record and went 1-1 in their first ever appearance in the D1A National Tournament.
