D1A Rugby Weekend Preview

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a try in the 79th minute from Reese Oberlin last week against West Point, the men's rugby team will now focus their attention to their quarterfinal opponent in Lindenwood. Davenport and Lindenwood met twice during the regular season in Mid-South Conference play, and the Lions took both games. Davenport will look to continue their National Tournament run on Saturday at 2 p.m. EST when they travel to St. Charles, Mo. to face Lindenwood in the D1A National Tournament.

SCOUTING LINDENWOOD

The Lions enter the weekend ranked fourth in D1A and had last weekend off as the top four teams had a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. The last time Lindenwood was in action was two weeks ago when they closed out the regular season against Arkansas State. The Lions dropped a close game 21-20 to the Red Wolves. Lindenwood finished the regular season with a 3-4 record overall and a 2-4 record in the Mid-South. The two conference wins came against Davenport. The only non-conference win for Lindenwood came against Wheeling Jesuit, as the Lions won 61-12.

THE PANTHERS

Davenport heads into the weekend at 6-8 on the season, and Davenport snapped their six game losing streak with a win the opening round of the tournament against West Point. The Panthers finished the regular season ranked fifth in the country to secure an at large bid into the tournament. Davenport advanced in the National Tournament after Reese Oberlin scored a try in the final minute of play to secure a 28-24 win.

Leading the Panthers in points this season is Brady Gent with 62 points. Gent has made 11 conversions, 10 penalty kicks and has tacked on two tries. After Gabe Sochanek and Reece Czarnecki scored tries last weekend against West Point, they both lead the team with seven tries each. Sochanek and Angus MacLellan have led the charge on the front line as they were able to match the Black Knights physicality last weekend, and they look to do the same against Lindenwood this weekend.

The Panthers will look to continue their postseason run on Saturday when they face Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. at 2 p.m. EST.
