GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's rugby team faced West Point to start their D1A National Tournament run. Reese Oberlin scored a try in the final minute give the Panthers a lead late in the game and the Panthers were able to hang onto win the game 28-24. Davenport advanced to the quarterfinals in the D1A Rugby National Tournament, where DU will face Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
Davenport started the game hot as Reece Czarnecki scored a try to start the game to take an early 5-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Brady Gent capitalized on a penalty kick to increase the DU lead to eight. West Point got on the board in the 18th minute, and after a try and conversion the Panther lead was cut to just one.
 
Gabe Sochanek found a seam down the middle and scored his only try of the game to give Davenport a 15-7 lead with 17 minutes left in the first half. The Black Knight scored a try in the 36th minute to make it a 15-12 game at half time.
 
Brady Gent started the scoring in the second half with a successful penalty kick to increase the Panther lead to six points. West Point came back and scored a try followed by a conversion to cut the Davenport lead back to one. Gent converted on his third penalty kick of the game to increase the Davenport lead to three.
 
With five minutes left in the game, the Black Knights scored a try to take a three-point lead. The Panthers looked to make a late comeback looking to advance in the tournament and Reese Oberlin was able to touch the ball down for a try in the final minute and Gent was successful on the conversion to give Davenport a 28-24 lead with less than a minute remaining. Davenport was able to hang onto the win and advance to the D1A Rugby National Tournament quarterfinals.
 
The Panthers will travel to St. Charles, Mo. next Saturday to face Lindenwood in the National Tournament quarterfinals at 1 p.m.
