GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport will play four matches in the next three days and they got it started with a 9-0 win over cross-town foe Calvin College on Thursday evening. The win lifts the Panthers, who are ranked No. 20 in the latest NAIA Top-25 Poll, to 10-4 in dual matches and they now will host Cardinal Stritch Friday followed by Marian and St. Francis on Saturday.
Using a few different doubles lineups, head coach
Patrick Grashorn saw his team pick up three relatively quick wins to go up 3-0.
Christian Woods teamed up with
Jordan Parker to win 8-0 at No. 1 while DU also got victories from
Juan-Philip van Antwerpen and
Sam Rogerson (8-1 at No. 2) as well as
Kevin Slagh and
Haja Denise (8-5 at No. 3).
Turning to singles, five of the six doubles players all posted wins and they all came in straight sets with
Sam Rogerson winning with the most convincing score (6-0, 6-0 over Tom Griffin).
Zac Chambers was the only new player in singles for coach Grashorn as he won at No. 5 over Anthony Vroon; 6-1, 6-0.
Other winners for the Panthers were
Jordan Parker (def. Loukas Peterson 6-4, 6-4),
Christian Woods (def. John Strikwerda 6-1, 6-1),
Haja Denise (def. Steohen Healy 6-4, 6-3) and
Kevin Slagh (def. Jared Doezema 6-4, 6-4).
Davenport will now turn their attention to three consecutive home matches starting Friday against Cardinal Stritch at 6 p.m. All three matches this weekend will take place at the East Paris Courts.
