CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The Davenport D3 hockey team broke a third period tie to defeat California University of Pennsylvania 5-2 and advance to their third straight ACHA D3 Frozen Four.
Jordan Steger scored the goal that broke a nerve-wrenching tie in the third period to add to
Donald Sund's and
Blake Damerow's goals, giving DU a spot in the semifinal round against Hope College at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Davenport began control of the first period when Braden Burton scored a goal 10:11 into the game following a pass from line-mate
Jake Otto. Zachary Feher gave DU the 2-0 lead with just over two minutes remaining which would send Cal Penn and the Panthers into the second period.
Cal Penn cut the margin in half in the second with a goal with just over six minutes to play to make it a one goal game. Four minutes later Cal Penn made it a new game by tying it up and holding DU to create an 2-2 contest heading into the final intermission.
Fifth year senior
Jordan Steger came up big in his final run in the national tourney by breaking the tie following a pass from Feher just four minutes into the third and one minute later
Donald Sund scored a goal that would create a 4-2 margin and send Cal Penn into panic mode. The Panther defense held Cal Penn until
Blake Damerow scored an empty net goal with 35 seconds left in the game to seal Davenport's win and send them into the semi-final round against Hope College.
Davenport will be making their third straight appearance in the ACHA Frozen Four and will be looking at making its second in the title game. They will have to go through MCHC and North Region rival Hope College to do so.
