GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Daniel Swink and
Bryon Guerin both scored clutch goals in the third period to give DU a 5-2 win that clinched the second straight MCHC West title. The victory over the Knights improves their record to 25-5-0-1 and their MCHC record to 11-2-0-1 which keeps them at least one point ahead of Hope in the final standings.
Calvin was able to capture an early goal with 17 minutes remaining in the first but
Branden Burton caught a pass from
Donald Sund to continue his scoring spree from last night with a goal at the eight minute mark that would tie the game at 1-1. Just before the first period was over,
Bryon Guerin and
Zachary Bodziak worked together on a passing play that resulted in DU taking a one goal lead going into the intermission.
The Knights and Panthers shared puck possession throughout the second but neither team could capitalize on a goal and DU was one period away from their second straight MCHC title.
Daniel Swink and
Jake Otto took advantage of a power-play opportunity 3:56 seconds into the third period with a clutch goal that gave DU the breathing room they needed. Calvin responded halfway through the third to make it a one goal game once again, but Sund and Guerin managed to capitalize on a pair of goals in the minutes following to make the score 5-2 with eight minutes left.
Davenport will now look towards the first two games of the MCHC Tournament next weekend. The conference tournament will actually be played over two weekends in the next month with the Regional Tournament squeezed in between. The final regional rankings will determine if DU will need to play in the regional and they could avoid that trip if they move into the top-two spots.
