GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Tiesha Stokes scored 17 points, Kelly Dineen and Shaina Johnson both scored 11 as the trio took part of a 26-2 run in the span of 10:49 in the second half to steer the Davenport women's basketball team to their 19th straight win with an 81-55 victory over crosstown rival Aquinas on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Davenport clinched at least a share of its eighth straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular-season title.
The Panthers (24-1, 17-1 WHAC) need a win or a Cornerstone and Siena Heights loss to claim the championship outright and secure the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
Alex Law connected all four of her successful field goals from 3-point range to finish the day with 12 points. The Panthers also matched their season best with a dozen field goals from beyond the arc.
Coming out of the locker room trailing 42-38, the Saints (18-7, 11-7 WHAC) tied the game with 17:32 left but the tide would turn over to the Panthers. Davenport would hold Aquinas to only free throws during a 26-4 run in the span of 11:05. Aquinas snapped their struggle from the field with 6:09 left. Stokes collected 11 points during the run, Dineen and Shaina Johnson contributed six and five, respectively.
Davenport turned to 3-point shooting in the first half, going 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) with Alex Law making four of them off the bench. Kelly Dineen and Kayleigh VanKeulen also had a pair of successful shots from beyond the arc.
The Saints couldn't take advantage on the free throw line in the first period, making only three on eight attempts. Davenport, meanwhile, made two visits to the charity stripe, with Dineen making one of two opportunities.
Both teams trade off baskets until a 10-2 DU run in the span of 2:11 gave the Panthers a 16-8 lead with 13:34 left. After a free throw and two field goals by Aquinas cut Davenport's lead to 36-34 at the 3:37 mark, Shaina Johnson and Law added a bit of breathing room with back-to-back shots from 3-point range. Aquinas would add four more points to head into the locker room trailing 42-38.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport improves to 17-6 all-time against Aquinas… The Panthers limited Aquinas to only 17 points in the latter period, which marks a season-best for DU…Tiesha Stokes has reached double figures in points for six consecutive games.
