GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Donald Sund led the Davenport D3 hockey team to an 8-3 victory over Calvin with two goals and two assists Friday evening at Eagles Ice Center. The Panthers, winners of six straight games, improve to 24-5-0-1 overall and 10-2-0-1 record MCHC play.
Davenport and Calvin will shift their series over to Patterson Ice Center Saturday at 7:20 p.m. It will also mark the final game of the regular-season for DU
.
Zachary Bodziak and
Branden Burton both scored a minute apart halfway through the first period, which gave DU a 2-0 lead. The early two-goal lead proved to be crucial as the Knights responded with a goal at the 6:30 mark.
The Panthers got the extra goal back when Sund caught a pass from
Jake Otto with two minutes left in the opening period.
Calvin held Davenport scoreless until the 9:25 mark of the second when Sund net his second goal of the game off a pass from
Willis Gelow. One minute later
Bryon Guerin flipped a pass to
Blake Damerow who managed to slip it past the Knight's goalie. Burton added the sixth goal for the Panthers at the 6:19 mark with a little help from Sund and
Daniel Swink.
Calvin made a valiant effort in period three with two quick goals that cut Davenport's lead to 6-3 with 17 minutes remaining. Swink captured a goal at the 14:10 mark to increase DU's lead to 7-3 and within two minutes Burton would score a hat-trick goal putting the Panthers in the lead 8-3 until the end of the period.
