GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Dominez Burnett and Mike Betcher ignited a spark in the second half that proved to be key in the ninth-ranked Davenport men's basketball team's 72-51 win over Indiana Tech in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal Wednesday night. Burnett scored all of his 13 points in the second half with Betcher playing catch-up with 10 to finish with a career-high 18 points. Davenport, winners of nine straight games, will host Northwestern Ohio in the semifinal round Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
The Racers eliminated visiting Lourdes 83-69 in the opening round the conference tournament in Lima to set up a rubber match with the Panthers. Northwestern Ohio and Davenport split their regular-season meeting with each team taking a road win.
 
Along with going 7-for-8 from the field, Betcher went a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to complete his 18-point evening. JaVontae Ford also reached double figures in points with 14.
 
Davenport (26-5) went 30-for-57 (52.6 percent) from around the around the perimeter, making it the third straight game it has reached the half century mark in field goal range.
 
In what is likely his final game at the helm, Al Grushkin's Warriors (16-14) was held to a 42.9 shooting percentage (21-for-49). Leading scorer Rontray Chavis and Jeff Hoskins led the effort for Indiana Tech with a dozen points each.
 
Both teams got off to a slow start but it was Davenport that jumped onto the board first with a pair of JaVontae Ford free throws at 18:03. Indiana Tech's only lead in the half came right after when back-to-back baskets by Nick Lewis followed by a jumper from John Cooksey elevated the Warriors to a 6-2 lead.
 
The lead would change hands one more time before a 16-0 Davenport run lifted it to a 24-10 lead with 7:03 left. The Warriors got into a rhythm within the final five minutes to head into the locker room trailing 29-19.
 
Ford and Mike Betcher each had eight points at the half while forwards DeArmond Davis and Dawid Czerniawski each had four of the Panthers 18 rebounds. Davenport went 11-for-24 (45.8 percent) from the floor.
 
Post-Game Notes
Davenport has evened the all-time series with Indiana Tech 12 wins apiece…Prior to tonight's game, head coach Burt Paddock and his staff presented Dominez Burnett a game ball commemorating his achievement of becoming the fastest player in school history to reach 1,000 career points, doing so against UM-Deaborn Feb. 19…Davenport closes the book of February with a perfect 7-0 record
