DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – The No. 7 Davenport men's soccer team's run in the NAIA National Championship continues thanks to
Dino Duratovic.
Tied at two goals apiece in the 94
th minute, the Bosnia native received a cross from fellow senior
Tyler Fischer and his shot in the middle of St. Andrews' box easily was unanswered to give the Panthers an overtime victory in the second round of the championship at Hilltopper Stadium Tuesday.
Davenport (19-3-1), which set a new school record in wins, will face Grand View (Iowa) in the program's first appearance in the quarterfinal round Wednesday at 4 p.m.
In addition to an assist, Fischer also scored the Panthers first goal of the match in the second half and
Joan Nievas net the second goal.
Although the Panthers had better control throughout the first half, the Knights (17-2-1) drew struck first in the 36
th minute. St. Andrews volleyed the ball off a corner kick to break the ice.
Fischer knotted it up one goal apiece in the 57
th minute when he fired a loose ball from the left side into an open spot at the net. Seven minutes later, Duratovic dribbled to left corner and crossed for Dzenan Catic in the middle, and although the nation's leading scorer didn't have quite control of the ball for the shot, Nievas picked him up and fired into the goal to take a 2-1 lead.
St. Andrews picked a lot more momentum late in the second half and managed to even the score in the 86
th minute.
The Panthers edged the Knights in shots 16-13 overall, 7-6 on goal. Davenport also had an 8-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
