Men’s Basketball Holds Off No. 15 Saint Francis in Cougar Classic

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Kevin Rich scored 18 points, Dominez Burnett added 16 points along with eight rebounds, and the No. 4 Davenport men's basketball team edged by Saint Francis (Ind.) 74-72 in the championship game of the Cougar Classic Saturday afternoon.

Thomas Drew and Nick Gamble also reached double figures in points, scoring 14 and 12 respectively. Bishop Robinson went to the glass six times to finish behind Burnett in that department.

The Panthers (3-0) couldn't quite stop Kegan Comer, who made five of his eight field goals from 3-point range to record 26 points on the afternoon. He also went a perfect 5-for-5 on the free throw line.

Despite the win, Davenport was outrebounded 30-28 by Saint Francis (4-1) while shooting 48 percent (25-for-48) from the field. The Cougars went 25-for-48 (48 percent) with nine of their 19 shots from the beyond the arc.

Davenport led by as many as 14 midway through the first half. Saint Francis did reel itself back into the game and a field goal followed by a free throw gave the Cougars a 41-36 lead with 15:57 left in the second period. The Panthers regrouped shortly after and used a 9-0 run to regain the lead and never look back.

Saint Francis got the score to within two following a Comer 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Burnett was named the tournament's most valuable player and is joined by Bishop Robinson on the all-tournament team.

Davenport will have Sunday off to prepare for the home opener against Purdue North Central Monday at 7 p.m.
