LIVONIA, Mich. – The No. 25 Davenport women's soccer team tried to bounce back from a two-goal deficit but couldn't produce any goals as Madonna blanked the Panthers 2-0 afternoon in the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday.
Davenport will wait to see if its resume of a 10-5-3 overall record and having been ranked in the NAIA Top 25 all season long is enough to receive an at-large bid to the upcoming NAIA National Championship.
Madonna jumped up front 6:41 into the match when the dangerous Ashley Parent took control of a loose ball following a corner kick and fired into the upper left corner for the goal. The Crusaders added more breathing room in the 37
th minute when recently named first-team All-WHAC Katlyn Krysiak two-touched around the Panther defense and bent a shot into the left post from the right side.
The Panthers had never stopped pressing against the Crusaders defense, outshooting their opponent 23-5 overall, 13-5 on goal. Davenport also had the advantage on the corner kick opportunities 6-1.
Michelle Marcus, who had been recovering from an injury she suffered at Saint Xavier nearly two months ago, made her first appearance since then and has made three saves while her opposite Blaire Schmalenberg stopped 13.
