Women’s Basketball Falls to Michigan in Exhibition Play

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Getting the experience to play in an NCAA Division I atmosphere, the Davenport women's basketball team started off with a 5-0 lead and trailed by 12 at halftime, but the University of Michigan took control of the second half to take a 74-39 exhibition win in front of 786 in attendance at the Crisler Center Sunday afternoon.

Daina Grazulis led the Panthers with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, Kia Frazier also reached double figures with 10 points and Kelly Dineen finished with five points, six rebounds and two steals.

Katelynn Flaherty had 17 points, including making 5-of-6 from the 3-point line, to lead the Wolverines, who shot 43.8 percent from the floor. Cyesha Goree finished with 15 points and was one board short from a double-double. The Panthers took care of the glass, winning the rebounding department 41-34 including 15 offensively.

Davenport appeared to show nerves on the floor despite taking the 5-0 lead to start the game. Turnovers, however, became part of a difference in the first half as it helped the Wolverines build a 22-4 run to take a 22-9 lead at the halfway mark of the opening half.

The Panthers did bring the lead down to five, 24-19, after two layups from Grazulis and Frazier along with a 3-pointer by Dineen.

DU went into the locker room trailing the Wolverines 35-23. The Panthers shot 42 percent (10-24) from the field while holding Michigan to 45 (13-29). Grazulis had nine points in the opening period while Frazier had six and Dineen earned five.

Michigan went on to outscore the Panthers 39-16 in the second half.

The fourth-ranked Panthers resume regular-season play with two NAIA Top 25 teams visiting the Student Center, starting with No. 19 Huntington (Ind.) Friday at 7 p.m. followed by the defending national champions Saint Francis (Ind.) Saturday at 5 p.m.
