Early Run Gives No. 4 Women’s Basketball First Road Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 4 Davenport women's basketball team caused Aquinas to make 25 turnovers and managed to produce 30 points off of those mistakes as the Panthers cruised to an 86-42 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference road win at their crosstown rival Wednesday night.

Daina Grazulis recorded a double-double for the third time in four games, leading the contest with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Angela Hubert went 3-for-4 from beyond the 3-point line as the freshman finished the day with 13 points.

Davenport (4-0, 2-0 WHAC) combined for a 53 shooting percentage, the third straight game the Panthers have shot over the half-century mark.

Meanwhile the Saints (2-6, 1-1 WHAC) had struggled finding the bucket on their home floor, going 10-for-34 (24 percent). Chelsea Matley led Aquinas with 14 points and was the only player in double figures.

The Panthers took a 14-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and held the Saints without a field goal (0-for-6) for the first 10 minutes. In fact, all six of Aquinas' points were from the charity stripe.

Pressure defense was the ingredient to Davenport's success right from the start, causing 15 turnovers while tallying 10 steals and 11 defensive rebounds. Kia Frazier led the pack with four in the opening half.

Davenport went into the locker room leading 45-18, shooting 56 percent (20-for-36) from the floor. Daina Grazulis had 12 points and nine rebounds while Kayleigh VanKeulen and Shaina Johnson both had eight points.

Aquinas relied on the free throws to earn its points, going 14-for-17 on the line. The Saints had two field goals, all inside the paint, on 17 attempts.

The Panthers return to the Student Center Saturday to play host to Madonna at 1 p.m.

Post-Game Notes
