GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a matchup that was billed as the NAIA National Game of the Week, No. 6 Cornerstone used a 15-2 spurt to open the second half to build a 20-point lead and the Golden Eagles held off a furious comeback by the No. 13 ranked Panthers to capture an 85-71 win. The win lifts Cornerstone to 19-3 (13-1 WHAC) on the year while the Panthers fall to 17-5 (10-4 WHAC). Both teams will return to the court Wednesday with DU traveling to Lawrence Tech and CU hitting the road to Madonna.

The duo of Wes Hudson (27) and Ben Lanning (20) were too much for Davenport to overcome the loss of their leading scorer and rebounder as the Golden Eagles posted their most convincing win in the 13 meetings in the rivalry since Burt Paddock has been in charge of the DU program.

The game was a see-saw affair for the first 10 minutes until Cornerstone used a 9-1 run to open a 7-point margin at 21-14. That last bucket forced Paddock to take a timeout and DU closed the gap to within two with a 15-6 spurt highlighted by four points from senior JaVontae Ford. That would be as close as DU would get for the remainder of the half as CU went into the locker room leading 44-37.

The story of the game then unfolded over the first four minutes of the second half as Cornerstone scored 15 of the first 17 points to open a 20 point lead at 59-39. CU connected on 6-7 shots from the field while DU was just 1-7 in that same time-frame.

With their backs to the wall on their home-court, DU climbed back into the game with a very methodical 15-2 run to get the lead down to what it was at halftime (7). JaVontae Ford scored eight points during the run while four others had the other seven points including a big bucket by Kevin Rich to force CU coach Kim Elders into a timeout.

The lead then hovered around the 10-point margin for the remainder of the contest with CU seniors Wes Hudson and Anthony Allen connecting on almost all of their foul shots to seal the road victory.

For the game, Cornerstone shot 50.9% from the field while DU was just 35.3. The rebounding edge was controlled by the host Panthers (46-28) with 21 of those coming on the offensive glass. The difference came from behind the arc where the Golden Eagles connected on nine of them including two from Lanning, Hudson and Travis Wells.

JaVontae Ford led the Panthers with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Braima Hai and Nick Gamble each had five assists.

Davenport will look to re-group when they travel to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday while the sixth-ranked Golden Eagles play at Madonna University which will be a battle of the league's top-two teams according to record.
