Next DU event: Wednesday, January 15 vs. Marygrove – 8 p.m.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Davenport has struggled in their program history in Fort Wayne, but that was not the case on Saturday as the No. 13 ranked Panthers posted an impressive 77-46 win over the host Warriors of Indiana Tech. The victory, which is the fifth straight for DU, lifts them to 15-3 on the season and 8-2 in the WHAC. They will return home on Wednesday to host Marygrove at 8 p.m.
JaVontae Ford and Nick Gamble combined to score 35 points while DU got points from all but two players as they walked away with their most convincing win ever at Indiana Tech 77-46. DeArmond Davis led the team with six rebounds and three blocked shots while Gamble and Dominez Burnett each had four assists.
The host Warriors jumped out to a fast 5-0 lead as they connected on their first two shots and eventually led 9-5 in the early going. The shots eventually started to fall for the Panthers and after back to back 3-pointers from Nick Gamble and JaVontae Ford, DU had their first lead at 11-9.
Gamble, a Fort Wayne native, would then reel off the next eight points for the Panthers as they would increase their lead to as many as eight in the opening half before taking a 39-32 lead into the locker room.
The late surge from the first half carried over into the second as DU rattled off the first 11 points highlighted a pair of triples from JaVontae Ford and one from Braima Hai. The defense then continued to impress as they held the Warriors without a point in the second half until 14:32 on the clock.
For as good as the defense was, the offense was right on par as the lead continued to grow and got to 22 on a nice post-move from freshman John McCloud to force Tech into their final timeout with just under 10 minutes to play. The largest margin of the game came in the final three minutes when DU got a layup from Cameron and a three-pointer from Brendan Cooper as the Panthers closed out their seventh road win in as many tries with a …win
The Panthers finished the night shooting 55.6% from the floor while outrebounding the Warriors 33-31. The DU defense limited Tech to just 34.0% shooting from the floor while forcing them into 16 turnovers.
DU, now 15-3 on the season, will return to the Student Center on Wednesday, January 15 for an 8 p.m. matchup with Marygrove College.
