GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's DIII hockey team triumphed over Central Michigan 5-2 in tonight's season opener. This exciting game brought every great aspect of hockey. DU goaltender Andrew Habasevich came away with an impressive 14 saves. Five different Panthers earned a goal tonight and Garret Garber and Jordan Crawford both captured two assists. The Panthers come back in action Saturday against Central Michigan for round two.

The first period started off intensely with a few shots and a couple penalties here and there for both parties. With just over nine minutes left in the first, Zack Feher managed to break the ice with the first goal of the game. Brandon Burton flicked a wrist shot in front with help from Donald Sund and Garret Garber and snagged the second goal for the Panthers with 5:51 to go. Blake Damerow managed to grab one more goal for the home team giving Davenport a 3-0 lead over CMU at the end of the first

As the 2nd period began, the score board stood still for over half the period until DU's Alexander Stewart tipped in Willis Gelows slap shot from the blue line giving the Panthers a 4-0 advantage. CMU finally broke their silence when the Chippewas Austin Cole scored with just over two minutes to go. Davenport rapidly responded with a goal from Daniel Swink less than 30 seconds later. Davenport was up 5-1 with one period to go.

The 3rd period of play was made up of fewer goals and more hits from every player on the ice. Exhaustion from the first two periods of play seemed to set in more and more as the game went on. Davenport saw many huge hits from players like defender Jake Hambridge. The Panther offense saw plenty of great one-time opportunities, but they couldn't get one in the back of the net. CMU slipped one past goalie Andrew Habasevich with less than five to play, ending the game 5-2.

Saturday brings another rough matchup between Davenport and Central Michigan at 8:50 p.m. The teams have less than 24 hours to rest before they meet again at Patterson Ice Center.
