GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With just two days before the start of the biggest event of the fall season, the men's tennis team got their season started with a convincing 8-1 win over cross-town foe Cornerstone on Tuesday night. The Panthers led 3-0 after doubles and despite falling in one of the six singles matches, posted the victory in the season opener. DU now directs their attention to the USTA/ITA East Regional that they will host from Thursday through Saturday.

Coming off the most successful season in their short five-year history, the men's team got their 2013-14 slate started with a bang against a cross-town rival. The Panthers cruised to an opening 8-1 win over the Golden Eagles highlighted by a couple of exciting five-set matches.

After the Panthers posted three wins by a combined score of 24-7 in doubles, the attention turned to singles where Christian Woods rebounded from a first set loss in his first ever match at No. 1 singles and finished with a 4-6, 6-2, 13-11 win. Other three set winners for the Panthers were Zach Chambers (6-4, 2-6, 10-7) and Tyler Chambers (6-3, 3-6, 10-8).

Posting two-set wins for DU were No. 4 singles Juan Philip van Antwerpen who started his collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-0 win and Sam Rogerson posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2

Davenport will now focus on the USTA/ITA East Regional in which they will be the host school from Thursday through Saturday. The draws were released earlier today and are posted on the DU Athletic website.
